Die Hauptdarstellerin Sidney Flanigan war eigentlich gar keine Schauspielerin, sondern lebte bis zu den Dreharbeiten als Musikerin in Buffalo. Never Rarely Sometimes Always ist ihr erster Film. Mit ihrem klaren verschlossenen Gesicht erinnert sie ein wenig an die junge Saoirse Ronan. In manchen Einstellungen sieht sie – blass, dunkelhaarig, in sich gekehrt – wie eine mittelalterliche Madonna aus. Etwas Unberührbares umgibt sie. Umso intensiver gerät die zentrale Szene. Und während die Kamera zunächst noch mit Schnitt und Gegenschnitt arbeitet, fokussiert sie sich im Laufe der Szene immer stärker auf Autumn. Ihr Gesicht füllt minutenlang die Leinwand in Nahaufnahme. "War Ihr Partner Ihnen gegenüber schon einmal gewalttätig? " – "Wurden Sie jemals zum Sex gezwungen?
